Consistent CO2 compensation since the company was founded
Ever since the Corona virus has been occupying all news channels, a different, no less important topic has gone rather quiet. The climate crisis, it seems, has been resolved since March 2020, at least in the media. Even if the current lack of interest in the media says otherwise, the climate crisis is by no means over. On the contrary, emissions of greenhouse gases are rising almost unchecked worldwide - and are continuing to change our climate on Earth.
For us as a company, the protection of the environment and the preservation of livable conditions for future generations have been at the top of our internal agenda since our company was founded in 2017. As a building block for maximum climate neutrality, we have, for example, been compensating for all CO2 emissions generated by shipping since 2017 by purchasing certificates from our partner South Pole. In 2019 alone, we purchased a total of 1,128 certificates generated by the Xenamnoy Hydropower Plant Project in Laos. 1,128 certificates are equivalent to offsetting 1,128 tons of CO2 - which not only offsets the emissions generated by our shipments. The Xenamnoy Hydropower Plant Project
Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia and has about 7 million inhabitants on an area of 236,800 km². In Laos, as almost everywhere else in Asia, the demand for electricity is continuously increasing. Due to its location, the country has enormous potential for energy production through hydropower. Unfortunately, the country currently lacks the necessary economic resources to provide clean energy nationwide. Currently, the inhabitants of Laos cover their energy needs by using firewood. This not only leads to increased CO2 emissions, but also contributes significantly to the decline of the unique tropical forests in the region. Tropical forests, however, are the "green lungs" of our planet - their disappearance is further fueling climate change.
With the Xenamnoy Hydropower Plant Project, the immense hydropower potential of Laos is now being used to supply rural communities in particular with clean electricity from renewable energy sources. The power plant uses the natural power of running water to generate electricity. The total capacity of 14.8 MW is used to feed electricity into local power grids.
Since the start of the project, considerably less firewood has been used for energy production. The forests and vegetation in Laos are slowly but steadily recovering. This alone is a real reason for joy - but the project achieves much more! The hydroelectric power plant contributes directly to sustainable development on site by upgrading the infrastructure, implementing a water supply program for the local population and, last but not least, by creating jobs. At present, 23 jobs have been created for the local population, which is noticeably boosting the economy in the region. And to back up this success with hard numbers: 48,000 tons of CO2 are saved annually if water is used instead of firewood for energy production.
The Xenamnoy 1 project is Gold Standard certified, which is only awarded to projects that are proven to reduce greenhouse gases while being good for the local environment and social concerns of the population.
South Pole: Climate protection for all

Wendelstein 7-X at the IPP facility in Greifswald is the world’s largest and most modern “stellarator” fusion reactor. Here, the researchers aim to demonstrate the suitability of this special type of facility as a power plant in continuous operation, making it a key element of international fusi¬on research. In order to achieve their goal, the IPP depends on the efficient procurement of high-quality components. “We’ve developed the first online calculator for converting Rx/Ra roughness values in all directions. There are several ways of determining the surface quality of manufactured parts. The most common are the roughness average, Ra, and the roughness depth, Rz. Since direct conversions of Rz and Ra are impossible, there hasn’t been an online tool addressing this challenge up to now. Our calculator outputs the average value of a conversion interval determined by us, which is sufficient in practice and provides significantly more accurate results than the various rules of thumb you’ll find on the Internet,” explains Benjamin Schwab, Head of Marketing & Sales at FACTUREE.
FACTUREE also offers an optimized fit calculator, the first of its kind on the market to provide a quantity processing function and reciprocal calculation. “Not only can the online fit calculator establish the maximum tolerated dimensions for a given nominal dimension and type of fit, it’s also the first fit calculator that features reciprocal calculation. This can be helpful if, alongside the nominal dimension, only the tolerance deviations and not the tolerance classes are specified on drawings. If both the internal and external fit are given, the type of fit, for example clearance fit, is also calculated, and visualized in a comprehensible way,” explains Benjamin Schwab.
FACTUREE has precisely tailored the online tools to customer requirements. Even in the beta phase, the tools were being accessed an average of over 1,000 times per day.
“The demand for the new online calculators is very high. During the beta phase, we collected feedback from users and used it to create the full version. Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller is currently pushing the Federal Ministry of Transport to allow Berlin to participate in a nationwide pilot project trialling this kind of season ticket for bus and train. Austrian capital Vienna is being used as an example for Berlin, having offered a similar season ticket since 2012.
Supporters of the ticket are facing critical opposition, however, with economic aspects among the issues being discussed. For example, the initiative in Vienna did not result in any new customers using the buses and trains – the strategy of developing the transport infrastructure and increasing parking fees, on the other hand, has been considered more successful.
Mobility transition as key element of sustainable urban development
The annual ticket is intended to make public transport more attractive to employees and employers. Employer contributions towards tickets from public transport company Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) became tax-free again at the start of the year, with the BVG additionally subsidising the tickets. Berlin, January 7th 2020 – The Online Manufacturer FACTUREE is now ISO 9001 certified. The CNC manufacturing network enables its customers to procure modern production parts through digitization, automation and networking. The certification emphasizes that the company has a continuously improved quality management system and the associated high efficiency. FACTUREE is the first supplier in its segment to have this certification. This results in a significantly increased market potential for the company.
"ISO 9001 certification is widely used for manufacturing companies with their own machines, but it is clearly an exception for manufacturing networks. This gives us a unique position, because none of our direct competitors has such a certification," explains Benjamin Schwab, Head of Marketing & Sales at cwmk GmbH, and adds: "Some companies may only purchase technical components such as turned and milled parts from ISO 9001-certified manufacturing companies. Now we can also serve this target group, from which we had already received many inquiries before.”
