Manufacturing process

Sheet metal bending online: Facturee offers these manufacturing options

Sheet metal bending is a key manufacturing process in the Sheet metal processing. Sheet metal is permanently formed into the desired shape by applying targeted pressure, with no material being removed.

Our production process takes all relevant factors into account: These include sheet thickness, bending radius, material (e.g. steel, stainless steel or aluminium) and the bending direction in relation to the rolling direction. This results in functional, precisely fitting parts, from individual pieces to series production.

FACTUREE relies on various bending processes to provide a comprehensive service, depending on the geometry, material and requirements.

CNC bending

During air bending, the sheet metal is only touched at the edges of the punch and die. The punch presses it into the open space of the die without filling it completely. This creates the bending angle through controlled elastic and plastic deformation.

This process is particularly flexible, as different angles can be realized with the same tool. It requires little energy and is economical in terms of material consumption, but is more suitable for applications with medium tolerance requirements.

Our manufacturing partners use air bending. This is important for many variants, short production times and cost-effective production of small to medium series. In combination with CNC press brakes, high repeat accuracy and efficiency can be achieved.

During die bending, the sheet metal is pressed completely into the die. The bending angle results from the shape of the punch and die. This ensures maximum precision and tight tolerances.

Die bending is particularly stable and delivers very precise, consistent results. It is ideal for series parts with constant geometries and tight dimensional specifications. It is often used in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering and medical technology.

Our manufacturing partners use die bending when maximum dimensional accuracy and process reliability are required. CNC-controlled presses ensure consistent quality for small and large quantities.

During swivel bending, the sheet metal remains stationary during the entire bending process. A bending beam swivels upwards or downwards and forms the sheet metal around the edge of a fixed upper beam.

This process is particularly gentle and is ideal for sensitive materials, coated surfaces or large-format sheet metal parts. Because the material is loaded over a large area rather than at specific points, less stress or damage occurs.

Our manufacturing partners use swivel bending primarily for demanding components with high visible quality or complex geometry. The precise control via CNC technology enables consistent results - even with higher quantities or changing sequences of bending cuts.

Tension and free-form bending are highly flexible processes for producing complex shapes, tight radii or intricate structures. In tension bending, the sheet metal is fixed and pulled over a shape under tension. It is ideal for thin materials with sensitive surfaces.

Free-form bending takes place without a fixed die and uses movable tools to freely shape radii and contours. Both processes enable creative designs and customized shapes that would not be possible using conventional methods.

Our manufacturing partners use tensile and free-form bending specifically for special requirements. It is used in prototype construction, design or for special functional solutions with high demands on dimensional accuracy and material protection.

Bending is an established bending process in sheet metal working. The sheet metal is permanently shaped by a press brake. A punch (upper tool) presses the sheet metal into a die (lower tool), creating a defined bend. Depending on the depth of the punch stroke, this is referred to as Air bending or Die bending - Both forms of bending.

The process is extremely precise and is suitable for a wide range of materials such as steel, stainless steel and aluminum. Thanks to modern CNC-controlled press brakes even complex bent parts can be produced with high repeat accuracy and tight tolerances.

Our manufacturing partners use bending both in series production and for customized projects. This is used to produce housings, angles, U-profiles or technical sheet metal parts.

Frequently requested materials

Steel sheets are robust, economical and extremely bendable (especially cold-rolled DC01). They can be formed with tight radii, often from 0.8-1× material thickness.

The rolling direction should be observed for clean bent parts. Galvanized variants are also easy to bend, but the zinc layer can crack if the radii are too tight. Ideal for structural parts in mechanical engineering.

Frequently requested:

  • DC01 | 1.0330 | Cold rolled strip
  • S235JR | 1.0038 | Structural steel
  • S355MC | 1.0976 | fine-grained steel
  • Z275 | galvanized steel

Stainless steel is durable, rustproof and suitable for bending - but only with generous radii. Due to its high strength, bending radii from 1.5× material thickness are common.

Soft variants such as 1.4301 (V2A) are easier to bend than harder or ferritic grades. Stainless steel sheet is the first choice for visible parts or hygiene applications in particular.

Frequently requested:

  • 1.4301 | X5CrNi18-10 | V2A
  • 1.4404 | X2CrNiMo17-12-2 | V4A
  • 1.4571 | V4A with titanium stabilization
  • 1.4016 | ferritic, easy to bend

Copper and brass are soft, conductive and very easy to bend - even with small radii <1× material thickness.

Copper is preferred for conductor rails, brass for decorative sheet metal parts or precision brackets. Tight radii can lead to surface distortion, so a good edge design is important. Ideal for the electrical industry and precision engineering.

Frequently requested:

  • Cu-DHP | CW024A | oxygen-free copper
  • Cu-ETP | CW004A | Electrolytic copper
  • CuZn37 | CW508L | Brass
  • CuZn39Pb3 | CW614N | free-cutting brass

Aluminum is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and easy to form - ideal for CNC bent parts with tight radii. Soft alloys such as EN AW-5754 can be bent very well, harder alloys such as EN AW-7075 only to a limited extent. Bending radii from 1× material thickness are realistic, depending on the alloy and rolling direction. Aluminum is suitable for precise, filigree folded parts in prototypes and series.

Frequently requested:

  • EN AW-5083 | AlMg4.5Mn
  • EN AW-5754 | AlMg3
  • EN AW-6060 | AlMgSi0.5
  • EN AW-7075 | AlZnMgCu1.5
  • EN AW 5052 | Al Mg2.5

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about bent parts

Sheet metal bending is a forming process whereby flat sheet metal is permanently shaped into the desired form by applying targeted force. No material is removed during this process. Sheet metal is plastically deformed using tools such as punches and dies. Bent parts are often produced using CNC-controlled press brakes.

The decisive factors are the type of material, sheet thickness, bending radius, bending direction (in relation to the rolling direction) and the desired angle. These factors influence the bendability, dimensional accuracy and stability of the component. Springback and minimum bending radii must also be taken into account in the design.

Typical materials are

  • Steel (e.g. DC01, S235)
  • Stainless steel (e.g. 1.4301)
  • Aluminum alloys (e.g. EN AW-5754, EN AW-6061)
  • Copper, brass or titanium for special applications
FACTUREE offers a wide range of materials for prototypes and series.

FACTUREE also offers other materials such as plastics. Please take a look at our material list or get in touch with a contact person.

When bending, the main Punch (upper tool) and Dies (lower tool) used in press brakes.

The geometry of the tools varies depending on the process (e.g. air bending, die bending). Swivel bending systems use a bending beam instead of a punch.

Bending is the overarching term for the forming of sheet metal by force. Bending is a specific form of bending. The workpiece is bent on a press brake with a punch and die - precise, repeatable and CNC-controlled.

Bending parts are ideal for:

  • Housing, cladding and covers
  • U-profiles, L-profiles, brackets and angles
  • Sheet metal parts for machines, vehicles, electronics or furniture
  • Support systems and functional components in plant engineering

Bent parts are used in the following industries, among others:

  • Mechanical and plant engineering
  • Automotive / E-Mobility
  • Electrical engineering and electronics
  • medical technology
  • Furniture and design industry
  • Building and metal trades
  • Aerospace
  • No offcuts or waste as with milling
  • High repeat accuracy for series
  • Cost-efficient even for small quantities
  • Fast production without complex tools
  • Flexibility for geometries and thicknesses of the sheet metal used
  • Ideal for prototyping to large-scale production

The tolerances for bent parts are based on DIN ISO 2768 (usually medium class „m“). They depend on the material, sheet thickness, bending length and angle. Typical tolerances are ±0.5 mm for lengths and ±1° for angles. For higher requirements, tighter tolerances are possible by arrangement.

Sheet metal bending can be used to create simple to complex geometries:

  • U-shapes, L-profiles, Z-profiles
  • Housing with multiple bending edges
  • Drill holes, recesses and forming
  • Connections from laser cuts or embossing
  • Narrow radii and long bent parts are also possible thanks to CNC technology.
